Beijing (TDI): Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao engaged in a video call with the European Commission’s Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis on Friday, agreeing to continue discussions regarding the EU’s proposed additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs).
During the call, both parties reviewed progress from previous negotiations and reaffirmed their commitment to resolving differences through dialogue.
They also confirmed that price commitments would remain a key focus for addressing the issue, as stated by the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM).
MOFCOM noted that the EU presented specific proposals regarding the price commitment plan and suggested that technical teams from both sides conduct further video consultations.
“China agreed to promptly initiate the next phase of consultations and welcomes the EU team to visit China at the earliest opportunity,” the statement read.

The European Commission echoed this sentiment, indicating that the two sides assessed the outcomes of eight technical negotiation rounds, acknowledging significant gaps that remain.
They reaffirmed their political commitment to finding a mutually agreeable resolution, with plans for further technical negotiations to commence shortly.
As of Friday evening, the timeline for these technical talks remains unclear.
However, the urgency of the situation is heightened, as the EU’s additional tariffs are expected to take effect on October 31 unless a satisfactory resolution is reached.
Both sides have been actively engaged in discussions since September 20, achieving some progress but still facing major differences regarding core issues affecting both Chinese and EU industries.
