New York, 26 October 2023(TDI): On 24 October Permanent Representative of China to the UN, Ambassador Zhang Jun, made a speech at the Security Council open debate on the Palestine-Israel conflict.

Ambassador Jun addressed the escalating conflict between Palestine and Israel, calling upon the international community to take immediate, responsible, and meaningful collective actions to address the crisis.

The statement highlighted several vital priorities for resolving the situation and alleviating the suffering of civilians affected by the conflict.

First, he emphasized the immediate need for a comprehensive ceasefire in the region. He said this call echoes the appeals made by various global leaders, humanitarian agencies, and millions of concerned individuals.

Ambassador Jun reiterated that the Security Council must demand an immediate ceasefire for the Palestine-Israel conflict.

Furthermore, he stressed that allowing the conflict to persist without intervention could lead to a catastrophic regional outcome and hinder the prospects of a two-state solution, leading Palestinians to be trapped in a vicious cycle of hatred and confrontation.

The second priority is to prevent further humanitarian disasters in the Gaza Strip. He commended efforts to open humanitarian corridors by regional countries and the UN Secretary-General.

Still, he called for a substantial increase in the amount of aid allowed into Gaza.

He demanded lifting the blockade, restoring essential services, and ending collective punishment.

Further, shared that Gaza has been out of power for almost 15 days, and whatever aid has been allowed is like a drop in a bucket.

Simultaneously, Ambassador Jun demanded that the Security Council resolutely defend the international rule of law, unequivocally condemn all violence and attacks against civilians, and unequivocally oppose any violations of international law.

He condemned violence against civilians and called for the release of detained persons.

Moreover, he strongly condemned the attack on hospitals and schools and demanded a thorough investigation into the attack on Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza.

Ambassador Jun reiterated the long-standing root cause of the Palestine-Israel conflict is the illegal occupation of the Palestinian territory and ignorance of their fundamental rights.

He emphasized the importance of recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people and the implementation of a two-state solution for lasting peace.
