Beijing, 13 July 2023 (TDI): China strongly condemns the recent public desecration of the Holy Quran taking place in Sweden stated by the  Chinese spokesperson Wang Wenbin’s regular press conference.

He said that China promotes mutual respect, inclusiveness and mutual learning between civilizations; thus, China opposes all acts of Islamophobia and desecration of Holy scripture.

He then recognized that so-called “freedom of speech” should never be used to stoke conflicts and hatred between civilizations, emphasizing the need to respect all religious beliefs and feelings.

UN Human Rights Council’s Urgent Action

The 53rd session of the UN Human Rights Council recently convened an urgent debate on the acts of burning the Quran in relevant countries.

In the urgent debate, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) proposed a draft resolution, which was subsequently passed with a majority vote of 28 in favor, 12 against, and seven abstentions.

The resolution condemned the recent public desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden and outlined the framework for further dialogue regarding this matter in the upcoming sessions of the council.

Moreover, Wang Wenbin showed China’s support for the urgent debate and its strong condemnation of the burning of the Holy Quran.

China’s Global Civilization Initiative (GCI)

The Global Civilization Initiative (GCI), proposed by China, aims to promote equality, mutual learning, dialogue, and inclusiveness among civilizations.

China is committed to working collaboratively with the international community to implement the Global Civilization Initiative. Meanwhile, it also urges the international community to follow and implement the principles outlined in the initiative.

Wang added that China aims to foster the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, which is only possible if the diversity of the civilizations is safeguarded.
