New York, 1 November 2023 (TDI): On 30 October, Chinese Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Zhang Jun made a speech at the Security Council emergency meeting demanding a humanitarian truce in Palestine.

In his speech, Ambassador Zhang Jun by thanking Brazil for organizing the session at the request of China and the UAE.

The Chinese ambassador said, that last Friday, the 10th emergency special session of the General Assembly adopted a resolution calling for an immediate and durable humanitarian truce in Gaza.

Which reflected the widespread call of the international community for a humanitarian truce in Gaza.

Regrettably and unacceptably, however, Israel has turned a deaf ear to the common concerns of the international community and has chosen to further escalate its military operations in Gaza by formally declaring the launch of a ground assault.

Furthermore, Ambassador Jun commented that Gaza, having one of the highest population densities in the world, is a land that has been under siege for 16 years.

The 2.3 million innocent people are living in utter fear amidst the indiscriminate bombardment and have been cut off from water, electricity, food, and fuel for 21 days, he added.

Just this past weekend, they experienced a communication blackout that lasted for nearly 36 hours.

Therefore, if they are left unchecked, the situation will spiral further out of control, and an even greater humanitarian catastrophe will be inevitable, with peace in the Middle East under threat.

Call for International Cooperation

Ambassador Jun reiterated that China calls on all parties involved in the conflict to cease hostilities, disengage immediately, and implement a humanitarian truce effectively.

He specifically called on Israel to fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law, lift its siege on Gaza, rescind its emergency evacuation order, and restore necessities to prevent a larger humanitarian disaster.

Additionally, Ambassador Jun emphasized the need for diplomatic efforts to secure the release of hostages and create space for dialogue to facilitate a political settlement.

He urged a certain major country with significant influence on the conflict parties to set aside self-interest and geopolitical considerations in the pursuit of peace.

Furthermore, the Chinese representative stressed that military means are not the solution to the Palestinian-Israeli issue, and violence only ignites feelings of hatred and confrontation, which, if not taken seriously, might spiral into the entire region, escalating into a war.

Finally, he called on the UN Security Council to strengthen unity, build consensus, and take responsible and meaningful actions to address the situation promptly.

He emphasized that silence or inaction at this critical juncture is unacceptable, as history will record the choices made by the international community.
