June 14, 2021(TDI): Nigeria has started the full operation of a China-assisted railway linking the southwestern cities of Lagos and Ibadan to ease public transportation and fuel goods movement.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari appreciated China’s initiative and said, “this signals another milestone in the drive of this administration to revitalize the railway system”.
The new rail line was constructed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, with a design speed of 150 km/h, it covers about 157 km with an extension of about 7 km to a busy port in Lagos.
This rail line will make it possible for people to work in Lagos and living outside Lagos, it will radically transform the life, work, and leisure for a multitude of their citizens. The (Lagos-Ibadan) corridor will open new opportunities for investments, real estate corridor, urban development, and commerce.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Cui Jianchun said that “this flag-off ceremony for commercial operation not only reflects China’s support for Nigeria’s economic and social development but it also a testimony of the far-sighted decision by Nigerian President on behalf of the people of this great country”.
