Chengdu, July 25, 2021- (TDI): On 24 July 2021, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi attended the third session of the Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue in Chengdu, China. The two parties discussed bilateral cooperation, the COVID-19 pandemic, peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan, and international and regional issues of mutual interests.

Both sides emphasized the importance of peace and stability in Afghanistan for socio-economic development and prosperity in the region. They also urged all Afghan stakeholders to work together to achieve a comprehensive and just political settlement as soon as possible. Both parties pledged their support in facilitating and supporting an “Afghan-led” peace and reconciliation process. This will ultimately lead to a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Afghanistan and will end all the violence in the region. They also underlined their support for Afghanistan’s peaceful rebuilding, their willingness to strengthen commercial and trade connections, and their willingness to assist Afghanistan in enhancing its potential for independent growth.

This reaffirmation by China and Pakistan of their commitment to deepening their all-weather strategic cooperation and pursuing efforts for long-term peace in Afghanistan will contribute to reaching an effective political settlement in Afghanistan.
