Chile-Colombia hold political consultations

Bogotá, 1 September 2023 (TDI): The Chilean foreign minister Van Klaveren along with Minister of Defense Maya Fernandez met with their Colombian counterparts on their visit to Colombia on August 31, 2023.

The second 2+2 political consultations and coordination mechanism meeting was held in Palacio de San Carlos located in Bogotá, Colombia.

All the ministry officials agreed that holding this meeting emphasizes the positive momentum of the bilateral relationship between Chile and Colombia.

Moreover, it serves as a means to strengthen cooperation and collaboration between the two countries in the areas of foreign policy and defense.

During the meeting, the foreign ministers reaffirmed their dedication to continuing their collaborative efforts towards achieving peace in Colombia.

Simultaneously, the defense ministers signed a declaration of cooperation in the satellite field.

Moreover, all four sectaries also signed a joint declaration, underscoring their shared objectives and commitments.

The Chilean chancellor Van Klaveren expressed his satisfaction at the end of the meeting by stating that the meeting was highly significant and that Colombia and Chile have close historical ties.

Furthermore, he underscored Chile’s large involvement in the peace process in Colombia and the Latin American region.

Chilean defense minister Maya highlighted the second occurrence of the 2 + 2 format in which both the foreign and defense ministers of the two states meet to discuss the shared interests of the states.

Additionally, she emphasized the positive and long-term bilateral relationship that exists between the armed forces and defense ministries of the two countries.

Bilateral meetings:

Chilean foreign minister Van Klaveren engaged in a separate meeting with the Colombian foreign minister. During this separate meeting, they discussed key aspects of the bilateral relationship between their respective countries.

In addition, he expressed his satisfaction with the depth of positive bilateral relations between the two states and the excellent level of cooperation. He also applauded the commitment of the two states to maintaining and enhancing their collaborative efforts.

Aside from the 2 + 2 meeting, the defense ministers of both states also engaged in bilateral talks. Minister Maya emphasized that from a South American perspective, there are several tasks to which both the country’s unity and defense can contribute.
