Port of Spain, 4 July 2023 (TDI): Caribbean Community’s 50th anniversary is celebrated today at the birthplace of the organization, Chaguaramas, amid the 45th regular Heads of Government Meeting in Trinidad and Tobago from July 3-6, 2023.

The theme of the remarkable ceremony of CARICOM Day is “50 years strong: A Solid Foundation to Build On”.

On this Golden Jubilee, the world extends felicitations to the Caribbean Community. The UK congratulates the Caribbean states and reaffirms its friendship, cooperation and partnership with them to achieve mutual sustainable development goals.

On the other hand, while congratulating CARICOM, Ukraine highlights its bilateral and multilateral engagement with the island states for promoting inclusive and sustainable development and safeguarding UN Charter principles.

CARICOM was established in Trinidad and Tobago on July 4, 1973, with the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas by Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago. It marked the beginning of the Caribbean islands’ multilateral engagement as well as their cooperation and collaboration with other countries.

CARICOM supports an inclusive, competitive and resilient Caribbean Community for the shared economic, social and political prosperity of island states.

45th Heads of Government Meeting

The 45th Heads of Government Meeting kicked off in Port of Spain at Hyatt Regency on July 3 and were graced with the presence of the members of CARICOM, the Heads of different states partnering with CARICOM as well as the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The meeting agenda encompassed food security concerns, climate change, security issues and the ongoing deteriorating situation in Haiti. During the opening address, SG Guterres urged the participants to accelerate their support to deal with the security and humanitarian situation in Haiti.

In addition, along with expressing his pleasure at attending the CARICOM 50th anniversary celebration, he stressed the importance of collaborating with Caribbean island nations.

CARICOM Summit and Golden Jubilee Celebrations rejuvenate its members’ commitment to achieving the objectives of the organization and realizing the collective development and progress of the Caribbean region.
