Canadian PM Visits Ukraine to Expand Cooperation

Kyiv (TDI): Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau visited Kyiv on the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, stressing Canada’s support for Ukraine.

During his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the two leaders discussed key issues, including defense cooperation, financial assistance, and sanctions against Russia.

“Thank you, Justin, especially for your leadership. We deeply thank Canadians for their support and military and humanitarian assistance. You have truly done a lot,” President Zelenskyy stated.

The Ukrainian leader also expressed his gratitude on social media, acknowledging Canada’s role in providing military aid and increasing Ukraine’s energy security.

“I am grateful to Canada for its leadership in supporting Ukrainians throughout these difficult three years and to Justin for organizing and hosting a productive G7 leaders’ meeting,” Zelenskyy said.

According to the Ukrainian President’s office, discussions centered on ensuring reliable security guarantees for Ukraine, with NATO membership being a primary focus.

Zelenskyy focused on the principle,“Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine, nothing about Europe without Europe.”

The meeting also highlighted Canada’s Group of Seven (G7) role in mobilizing international support for Ukraine.

“In particular, the parties discussed the consolidation of international efforts to support Ukraine under the Canadian presidency of the Group of Seven,” read an official statement.

The leaders also addressed the continuation of sanctions against Russia, focusing on restricting Russia’s shadow fleet and oil sector.

Canada’s Office of the Prime Minister released a statement marking the anniversary, condemning Russia’s actions as a violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

“Three years later, Ukraine stands defiant. Ukrainians are valiantly protecting their territory against relentless Russian attacks,” the statement noted.

The visit reaffirmed Canada’s continued support for Ukraine as the country remains resilient in the face of ongoing aggression.
