Ottawa, 25 May 2022 (TDI): The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, held telephonic conversations with the Prime Minister of Australia and the President of Ukraine.
Conversation with Australian Prime Minister
Justin Trudeau spoke with the newly-elected Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese to congratulate him on his election victory. They discussed bilateral relations and opportunities to enhance engagement between the two countries.
Moreover, the two leaders emphasized their shared commitment to addressing issues such as climate change, economic growth, gender equality, and inclusive growth. Furthermore, they also mentioned their common goal of advancing meaningful reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in their respective countries.
In addition, they discussed their partnership in the Indo-Pacific region. Finally, they spoke about the war in Ukraine and agreed to further coordinate in efforts to counter Russian aims and support Ukraine.
Australia and Canada are both a part of the Commonwealth realm and share a common head of state, Queen Elizabeth II. Moreover, the countries have had close cultural, political, and economic ties for centuries as they have similar colonial histories.
Conversation with Ukrainian President
On the same day, the Canadian Prime Minister spoke to the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Justin Trudeau reiterated Canada’s firm commitment to support Ukraine in its war against Russia.
Meanwhile, President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to Justin Trudeau for Canada’s firm support. He also thanked Canada for its pledge to send much-needed amounts of artillery ammunition to Ukraine.
Trudeau commended the Ukrainian President for his leadership and courage during wartime. He also noted the Ukrainian people’s courage and efforts in the face of the Russian invasion. Previously, Trudeau met Zelenskyy on his visit to Kyiv earlier this month.
Moreover, the two leaders discussed the ongoing situation of the war in Ukraine and the need to alleviate humanitarian suffering.
In addition, the leaders talked about global challenges as a result of the war, such as rising fuel prices and the food security crisis. They discussed the ways in which Canada could continue its support to Ukraine while addressing these issues.
Canada has thrown full and unwavering support behind Ukraine since the Russian invasion. It has taken part in international sanctions against Russia and has provided Ukraine with military and humanitarian aid. Canada has also called for the expulsion of Russia from multilateral forums.
