Canada and Kenya strengthening Bilateral Ties

Nairobi, 5 May 2023 (TDI): Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly is in Kenya to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two countries. The meeting between President William Ruto of Kenya and the Canadian Foreign Minister was held at State House Nairobi.

Kenya and Canada are working on a labor migration framework that will enable more Kenyans to get skilled jobs in Canada. To meet the Canadian job market requirements, Kenya will upgrade the training of health workers at Medical Training Colleges, technical colleges, and vocational institutions.

President Ruto said:

            “Kenya’s workforce is our greatest resource. It is well-trained and hardworking. Even as we invest in sectors that will create employment in the country, opportunities for Kenyans abroad are another way to lift our young people.”

Meeting with Kenyan Foreign Minister

Canadian Foreign Minister also met Alfred Mutua, the Cabinet Secretary Minister of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs of the Republic of Kenya, at his office. Both discussed issues of mutual concern, including education scholarships and job opportunities for Kenyans. They also exchanged words on ways to attract Canadian investors in the Kenyan market.

Kenyan CS expressed his gratitude for Canadian support in Kenya Coast Guard Services. She announced Canada’s support of Kshs—8 billion towards Kenya’s mitigation against climate change.

Later, in the joint press conference, both reaffirmed the mutual commitment to cooperation on trade and investment, development, and to continue efforts for regional peace and security.

Sudan Situation

Commenting on the security situation in Sudan, they both called on the warring parties in Sudan to pursue the path of peace while allowing humanitarian support to the victims of the conflict. Furthermore, she acknowledged that Kenya, a major player in the continent, has taken a leading role throughout the crisis.

She reaffirmed that Kenya has the full support of Canada to tackle the crisis, including meditation efforts as well the humanitarian needs.
