Doha, 1 July 2022 (TDI): A delegation led by Hugo Shorter, the Charge d’Affaires of the British Embassy in Kabul, met with Maulvi Amir Khan Muttaqi, the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan.

The meeting took place in Doha, Qatar. During the meeting, Hugo Shorter expressed compassion and condolences for the victims of the recent earthquake in eastern Afghanistan.

The Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson, Abdul Qahar Balkhi shared the news of the meeting on his Twitter account.

UK promised Relief for earthquake victims

The British delegation expressed sympathy for the recent earthquake victims and promised £ 3.5 million in emergency relief. Balkhi stated that more humanitarian aid will shortly be provided by the UK.

Balkhi conveyed that the discussion in the meeting also covered political and economic matters as well as the general state of Afghanistan.

Remarks of Hugo Shorter

The British Chargé d’Affaires stated that the UK does not support achieving political goals through violence and that they would adopt a practical approach to developing bilateral relations step-by-step.

Acting Foreign Minister Muttaqi praised Britain for its humanitarian assistance and emphasized the need to concentrate on infrastructure projects for the welfare and growth of the Afghan population and the country.

He also praised the recent British stance on not aiding any armed resistance in Afghanistan. Expanding bilateral ties and encouraging engagement was underlined by both parties.

The devastating earthquake in Afghanistan has affected everyone, and the UK is with them. Because of this, the UK is allocating £2.5 million of UK aid to the IFRC and NRC as part of our earlier-year $286 million funding commitment.
