Moscow, 16 February 2022 (TDI): Russian President, Vladimir Putin, met the Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro. The meeting took place on February 16.

Remarks of Russian President

Russian President extended blessings to the Brazilian President. Besides, he hoped for the successful outcome of the meeting. According to President Vladimir Putin, Russia is restoring interrupted relations amid the pandemic situation. He also said that mutual understanding and friendship have bound both countries.

Further, he maintained that Russia has substantive and constructive relations with the nation of Brazil. In this context, a joint statement has also been issued for further Russian-Brazilian collaboration.

In particular, President Vladimir Putin noted that both countries are prepared to support economic, political, and humanitarian ties. This is also essential for close network ties with the UN, G20, and BRICS. Brazil has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN for 2022-2023.

In this regard, the leading ministers of Brazil have visited Moscow as well. It includes defense and foreign ministers who are going to meet in the 2+2 format.

Moreover, the Russian President said that his government is working at various international venues proactively. Therefore, the Russian-Brazilian trade has grown eighty-seven percent.

Along these lines, the Russian President remarked that Brazil is the leading economic and trade partner of Russia in Latin America. And, this is a matter of great significance. Besides, this is the first visit of Jair Bolsonaro as a Brazilian President to Moscow.

Remarks of Brazilian President

Brazilian President said that it is a matter of honor to meet the Russian President. He further said that he feels a sense of solidarity with the Russian Federation. According to him, Brazil has prospects of collaboration in other areas such as agriculture, gas, oil, and defense.

In this context, the Brazilian President mentioned that his visit is a signal of growing and prosperous bilateral relations. Furthermore, he thanked the Russian President for pardoning a Brazilian citizen last year. Lastly, the Brazilian President highlighted that his government is ready for cooperation.

Remarks of Russian Foreign Minister

During the Russian-Brazilian talks in the 2+2 format, Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, remarked that this is the first time that Russian-Brazilian relations are having the defense and foreign ministers at the table.

On the Russian side, there were Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, and Defense Minister, Sergey Shoigu. On the other hand, Foreign Minister, Carlos Franca, and Defense Minister, Walter Souza Braga Netto represented Brazil in the 2+2 format.

Thereupon, he offered condolences for the tragic events which happened in Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately, the Petropolis is devastated due to landslides and floods.

The Russian Foreign Minister said that he is confident that this round of talks will review the specific features of foreign policy in the context of strengthened security.

It is pertinent to note that Russian Federation prefers an independent role for the Caribbean and Latin America. And, Brazil is playing a vital role in the development of this region.

Accordingly, Sergey Lavrov stated that he values the role of multilateral formats and regional associations in this regard.
