Washington D.C., 9 May 2023 (TDI): Secretary of the United States (US) Antony Blinken had a productive conversation today via phone call with Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Eli Cohen.
The two officials discussed various global issues of mutual concern, including recent developments in Sudan, Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, and cooperation on countering Iranian malign influence.
I spoke with Israeli Foreign Minister @elicoh1 about developments in Sudan and Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. Our support for Israel’s security is ironclad. We remain concerned by Israeli-Palestinian tensions and urge continued de-escalation efforts.

During the conversation, Secretary Blinken reaffirmed the US’s unwavering support for Israel’s security. He emphasized that the US remains committed to working closely with Israel to counter threats from Iran and other regional actors.
Secretary Blinken also noted the importance of recent meetings in Aqaba and Sharm El Sheikh aimed at de-escalating tensions. He urged both Israel and the Palestinian Authority to take additional steps to stabilize the situation in the West Bank and promote a durable calm.

“The United States remains committed to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” said Secretary Blinken. “We believe that a negotiated settlement is the only path to lasting peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike. We encourage both sides to engage in good-faith negotiations and to take concrete steps to advance the cause of peace.”

Apart from that, Secretary Blinken and Israeli Foreign Minister Cohen also discussed the situation in Sudan, where the US is closely monitoring developments following the recent military coup. Secretary Blinken stressed the need for a peaceful transition to a civilian-led government and called on all parties to respect the rights of the Sudanese people.

Finally, the two officials discussed Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and the importance of maintaining international pressure on Moscow. Secretary Blinken reiterated the US commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and emphasized the need for Russia to cease its destabilizing actions in the region.
Overall, the conversation between Secretary Blinken and Minister Cohen was productive and focused on a range of important issues facing the international community. The US remains committed to working closely with Israel and other partners around the world to promote peace, stability, and prosperity for all.
