Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister meets UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

-

Geneva, 2 September 2021 (TDI): Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Abul Kalam Abdul Momen interacted with the High commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet.

Both parties highlighted the need of justice for Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. The Foreign Minister of Bangladesh reaffirmed his country’s commitment to promoting the safe and voluntary return of Rohingya people to their homeland. He also expressed Bangladesh’s willingness to collaborate with Myanmar on this front.

The overwhelming exodus of Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar to Bangladesh in 2017 wreaked havoc on bilateral relations between the two countries. Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister thoroughly discussed the call for peace. The Rohingya problem is a roadblock, but given the worldwide COVID-19 outbreak, solid bilateral and regional interactions are critical.
