Bangladesh Seeks to Expand Trade, Investment With Pakistan: High Commissioner

Islamabad (TDI): Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Md. Iqbal Hussain, called on Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Petroleum, Ali Pervaiz Malik, at the Ministry of Petroleum. The discussions focused on cooperation in industries like limestone, coal and petroleum products.

Minister Malik highlighted Pakistan’s desire to have better ties with Bangladesh. He said, “Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is keen to support our brothers in Bangladesh and enhance cooperation in various sectors. Pakistan values its relationship with Bangladesh and is eager to explore joint ventures that benefit both nations.”

Both dignitaries explored sectors where cooperation is possible, including trade of limestone, coal, and petroleum products. They also agreed on knowledge-sharing and investment opportunities that must be created to maximize the potential of these sectors.

The High Commissioner of Bangladesh appreciated Pakistan’s willingness to strengthen economic and energy cooperation, noting that such collaboration would contribute to regional stability and prosperity. He reiterated Bangladesh’s interest in expanding trade and investment linkages with Pakistan.

Relationship between Pakistan and Bangladesh has become more open since the ouster of the latter’s former prime minister, Hasina Wajid, who was hostile towards Pakistan.

A renewed series of engagements, dialogue, and high-level meetings define this shift. Both countries have a history but this is perhaps the first in a long time that a friendly interim government in Bangladesh seeks stronger ties with Pakistan.
