Bangladesh Beat Pakistan in Second Test to Complete Whitewash

-

Rawalpindi, 3 September 2024 (TDI): Clinical Bangladesh won the second Test by 6 wickets to complete the 2-0 whitewash over Pakistan in Rawalpindi on Tuesday.

The visiting side chased down the 185-run target with 6 wickets in hand on the fifth day of the Test. The first day of the match had been washed out due to incessant rain.

This is Bangladesh’s first-ever Test series win over Pakistan and only the second overseas series win overall. They previously won the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2021.

“I am extremely disappointed [with the results],” Pakistan skipper Shan Masood said during the post-match talk.

He said he wasn’t expecting such a drastic start to the home season, and that the team hadn’t learned its lessons from past defeats.

“We waited 10 months for this opportunity. The story has been a bit of the same, like, Australia. We haven’t learnt our lessons. I think now it’s time where we’ve realised that where we thought we were playing good cricket in Australia and not finishing games,” he said.

Shan questioned the fitness of his players, especially the bowlers, saying he lost one fast bowler in each innings of this Test – referring to when Mohammad Ali fell ill in the first innings of the match.

Pakistan had their chances to win this game, but they failed to cease them.

In the first innings, Pakistan scored 274 on a tough wicket, thanks to fifties from Saim Ayub (58), Shan Masood (57), and Salman Ali Agha (54).

And then they had Bangladesh 26/6. But, Pakistan bowlers did not capitalize on that opportunity and allowed the lower-order batters to score over 200 runs to take the score to 262.

Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the two saviours, put up a brilliant 165-run partnership for the 7th wicket to bring their team out of crisis.

Litton scored 138 runs while Mehidy Hasan Miraz (78) was another plus for the visiting side.

Bangladesh bowled really well in the second innings as they restricted Pakistan to 172.

Requiring just 185 runs to win the second Test and complete the whitewash, Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam provided a 58-run stand. Shadman got out for 24 but Zakir’s 39-ball 40 put Bangladesh ahead of Pakistan in the game.

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (38), Mominul Haq (34) Mushfiqur Rahim (22), and Shakib al Hasan (21) also contributed to the famous win!
