15 June 2021 (TDI): Today Azerbaijan marks National Salvation Day in commemoration of the historic return of the national leader, Heydar Aliyev to Baku, in 1993. Azerbaijan gained its independence in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, the state fell prey to political instability as different politicians jockeyed for power. In 1992, the Azerbaijan Popular Front formed its government but was unable to maintain law and order and there was a high likelihood that civil war would break out. In such a challenging situation the Azerbaijanis looked up to Heydar Aliyev to save and lead the state who steered the nation to glory. He was popularly elected as the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 15th June 1993. He was later elected as the President of Azerbaijan on October 3rd 1993. Thereafter he led the state for the next ten years.
