Antony Blinken to strengthen US-Pacific Islands Partnerships

Washington DC, 19 May 2023 (TDI): Secretary of United States (US) Antony J. Blinken will embark on a visit to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on May 21-22 to engage with Pacific Islands Forum leaders and reinforce the US commitment to the Pacific region.

The visit aims to foster collaboration on critical issues, including climate change, inclusive economic growth, and regional security, while highlighting President Biden’s vision for a prosperous, resilient, and secure Pacific Islands region.

During his time in Port Moresby, Secretary Blinken will meet with leaders from the Pacific Islands Forum to discuss shared priorities and strategies for addressing the climate crisis. Recognizing the urgency of this global challenge, the Secretary will emphasize the US commitment to working closely with Pacific Islands nations to combat climate change, protect the environment, and promote sustainable development.

The discussions will also focus on advancing inclusive economic growth, ensuring that the people of the Pacific Islands benefit from the region’s vast potential.

Secretary Blinken will extend President Biden’s invitation to Pacific Islands leaders to visit Washington, D.C., later this year for the second US summit with the Pacific Islands Forum. The summit will serve as a platform for strengthening partnerships, exchanging ideas, and enhancing cooperation on key regional issues. The US is committed to deepening its engagement with the Pacific Islands and supporting the Pacific Islands Forum 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent.

In addition to his meetings with Pacific Islands Forum leaders, Secretary Blinken will hold talks with Prime Minister James Marape of Papua New Guinea. The discussions will focus on enhancing bilateral cooperation in defense and maritime security.

During the visit, Secretary Blinken will sign a bilateral defense cooperation agreement and a bilateral maritime security agreement, highlighting the US commitment to the region’s stability and security.
