Washington DC, 15 April 2023 (TDI): The United States (US) Trade Representative, Katherine Tai, and Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Liesje Schreinemacher have reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening the transatlantic relationship, following a meeting held today.

During the meeting, the two officials discussed a number of trade issues that are of mutual concern. They specifically discussed the ongoing negotiation between the US and the European Union (EU) on a Global Arrangement on Sustainable Steel and Aluminum.

The officials also discussed the recently launched negotiation of a US-EU Critical Minerals Agreement. Ambassador Tai and Dutch Minister both stressed the importance of these negotiations, which are aimed at enhancing trade cooperation between the two sides.

In addition to the discussions on the aforementioned issues, Ambassador Tai and Dutch Minister also noted with satisfaction the continued work of the US-EU Trade and Technology Council.

This council was established to strengthen trade and investment ties between the US and the EU, and to address shared challenges in the areas of technology and innovation.

In a joint statement following the meeting, Ambassador Tai and Dutch Minister emphasized the importance of the US-EU relationship, stating that it is “critical to the prosperity and security of both sides of the Atlantic.”

Furthermore, they also reiterated their commitment to work together to address shared challenges and to promote economic growth and job creation.

Additionally, Ambassador Tai expressed her appreciation for the Netherlands’ continued partnership with the US on important trade issues, noting that the two countries have a strong and longstanding economic relationship.

Also, she praised the Netherlands’ leadership on sustainability issues, including the country’s efforts to promote the circular economy.

On the other hand, Dutch Minister Liesje also welcomed the opportunity to meet with Ambassador Tai, and noted the importance of working closely with the US to address common trade challenges.

“The US is an essential trade partner for the Netherlands,” Liesje further added. Moreover, the Dutch Minister also voiced her support for the upcoming Trade and Technology Council in Sweden in May and emphasized the importance of the multilateral trading system.

Likewise, she expressed her country’s commitment to promoting sustainable trade practices and to supporting the ongoing negotiations between the US and the EU.

Overall, the meeting between Ambassador Tai and Dutch Minister was productive and highlighted the strong partnership between the US and the Netherlands.
