Ambassador of EU meeting Pakistan's Prime Minister

Islamabad, 12 August 2022 (TDI): Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Pakistan, Riina Kionka called on Shehbaz Sharif, Prime Minister of Pakistan at his office, on Thursday.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister highlighted that Pakistan considers its relations with the EU important and its historically close bilateral ties with EU member states as well.

Moreover, the Prime Minister underscored the importance of sustained high-level exchanges between the EU and Pakistan for further strengthening the partnership.

The Prime Minister also recalled his recent telephone conversations with Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and the EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen.

Further, he expressed confidence that the upcoming visits by the EU Parliamentary delegations to Pakistan will pave the way for enhancing cooperation between the two sides.

The Prime Minister credited the current GSP Plus scheme with enhancing the mutually beneficial trading ties between both sides. He hoped that Pakistan will continue to be part of the arrangement beyond 2023.

Moreover, both sides noted that Pakistan and EU relations are completing 60 years of bilateral relations this year. He stressed celebrating this milestone in a fitting manner. 

Apart from this, both parties held discussions on regional issues. Prime Minister discussed the importance of a peaceful and stable Afghanistan.

Additionally, he highlighted the cooperation that Pakistan had extended to the international community regarding Afghanistan, especially since August 2021.

Moreover, both sides discussed the upcoming rounds of political and security dialogues under Strategic Engagement Plan will deepen EU-Pakistan relations.

Lastly, Ambassador Riina Kionka expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for receiving her and an insightful meeting.

Dr. Riina Kionka was appointed the Ambassador of the EU to Pakistan in June 2022. Since then, the Ambassador has had several meetings with the officials of the Government of Pakistan

Recently, the EU Ambassador paid tribute to Pakistan on its 75th Independence Day by playing the national anthem on the trumpet.
