Overview of the Malian conflict

Mali transitioned from being a French colony to becoming an independent republic in 1960. The country has therefore endured decades of conflict and civil strife as a result of this transition.

These conflicts are due to the ethnic rebellions and Islamist militia groups that undermine the government and threaten the region’s stability.

This instability and militant activity on the Northern borders are of great concern for Algeria. Algeria is heavily invested in bringing peace and stability to Mali as it shares a large border with the country in the Sahel desert which is highly unsafe.

Algeria has barricaded and deployed troops on its border with Mali for increased security. The fear of growing militants from Mali alarms Algeria and other countries like the United States.

Both the United States and Algeria have come together to discuss the reduction of this extremism. In an attempt to counter terrorism, Algeria and Mali are also invested in diverse economic cooperation.

Recent meeting between Algerian-Malian Foreign Ministers

Previously on 8 August 2022 Foreign Minister of Algeria, Ramtane Lamamra also met with the Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdoulaye Diop during his visit to Algeria. In this meeting, both of the representatives discussed various political affairs.

This meeting mainly focused on boosting cordial relations between the two nations. Important issues like peace and security in Mali were also part of the discussion.
