AfDB wishes Nigeria on Independence day

Abuja, 1 October 2022 (TDI): The Republic of Nigeria is celebrating its 62nd independence day today, on October 1. The African Development Bank (AfDB) wished Nigeria on its independence day.

History of Nigerian Independence day

Nigeria celebrates the country’s independence from British rule which occurred in 1960. The British Empire started to decline and many territories in Africa were calling for independence in the 1950s.

This led to Nigeria’s independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, and becoming the Federation of Nigeria. A new constitution was also established with an elected Prime Minister and a ceremonial head of state.

Address by President of Nigeria

The President of the Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, addressed the nation on the occasion of its National day.

The President said that “I address you today, with a deep sense of gratitude to God & a high level of appreciation to all Nigerians whose tremendous goodwill gave me the opportunity to provide leadership for our great country at one of the trying times in her history.”

He also said, “Conscious that today’s address would be my last on an Independence Day as your President; I speak to the millions of Nigerians, who believed in me, propelled and stood by me in my quest to bequeath a country where all citizens have equal opportunities to achieve their lives desires in a peaceful atmosphere.”

The President told the public that the areas where Nigeria has made significant progress are in the eradication of deeply entrenched corruption that permeates all facets of our national development.

He clarified that “We strengthened the institutions for tackling corruption and also cultivated international support, which aided the repatriation of huge sums of money illegally kept outside the country.”

Buhari concluded his speech by saying “I was called to serve, along with my team, I saw an opportunity to create a better Nigeria which we have done with the support of Nigerians.

Almighty God and the good people of Nigeria supported us in laying a solid foundation for the Nigeria of our dreams.”
