ADB to approve US$ 600 million program for Pakistan

Islamabad, 10 November 2021 (TDI): The Asian Development Bank (ADB) board of directors is anticipated to approve a US$ 600 million program for the country’s social protection during the first week of December, according to Eugenue Zhukov, ADB’s Director General for Central and West Asia.

During a meeting with Finance and Revenue Advisor Shaukat Tarin, he notified about the program. According to a press release released by the Finance Ministry, the meeting included Country Director ADB, Yong Ye, and senior staff.

Eugenue Zhukov informed the Adviser that 80% of the monies authorised for vaccine purchase had been disbursed, and that he was willing to contribute extra funds if needed.

He noted that the ADB was planning a program on domestic resource mobilisation and was currently giving technical assistance for it. Shaukat Tarin praised the ADB for assisting Pakistan in procuring vaccinations and provided an outline of the country’s present economic status.

In the midst of multiple obstacles, the Adviser stressed that the government was dedicated to implementing reform in various sectors in order to address long-standing structural concerns and achieve sustainable and equitable growth.

He stated that the government has made initiatives to boost revenue collection by increasing the tax base, capturing retail transactions, and establishing single window operations, among other things.

He stated that efforts are being made to finish the remaining prior steps under the capital markets development program so that it can be disbursed on schedule.

The adviser praised the ADB’s help during the testing period and promised to provide whatever assistance needed to expedite slow-moving projects and fully operationalize the NDRMF.
