Almaty (TDI): The United States has signaled its readiness to play a role in the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan, with senior officials emphasizing their technological edge in the nuclear energy sector.
Khush Choksi, Senior Vice President of the United States’ Chamber of Commerce, showed enthusiasm during the visit of a U.S. business delegation to Almaty.
Choksi underscored the United States’ leadership in nuclear technologies and expressed hope that Kazakhstan will conduct an open and transparent tender process, allowing American companies to participate in the project.
“The U.S. has the best technologies for nuclear power plants. And we hope there will be an open tender, allowing American companies to participate,” Choksi said in response to questions from the media.
This development comes in the wake of a nationwide referendum held in Kazakhstan on October 6, which sought public approval for the construction of a nuclear power plant.
According to early results, 71.12% of voters supported the initiative, reflecting a strong national mandate for the project. However, official results are still awaited.
Multiple Proposals
While the U.S. has expressed interest, other nations are also vying for involvement in the project.
Russia, China, France, and South Korea have all proposed their own nuclear technologies and designs for the plant, making the project a subject of international competition, according to media reports.
France is particularly active, as noted by its inclusion in multiple discussions about the project’s future.

Kazakhstani authorities are currently evaluating these various proposals, and it is anticipated that the winner of the tender could be an international consortium.
The decision will likely hinge on both the technical and financial conditions offered by the competing countries.
