Islamabad (TDI): Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal met with Chen Chen, Director of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Transport Sector Group.
They discussed Pakistan’s transport infrastructure development and ongoing collaboration between ADB and Pakistan.
The meeting was held in Islamabad, in which senior officials from the Ministry of Planning and ADB’s Transport Sector specialists were also present.
During the discussion, Ahsan Iqbal outlined the critical need for enhanced road and rail connectivity.
He emphasized the importance of regional connectivity for economic growth. The minister noted that Pakistan is finalizing a comprehensive multi-modal connectivity plan.

Ahsan Iqbal welcomed ADB’s continued support and expertise in shaping these initiatives. H said that ADB’s input will foster Pakistan’s transport infrastructure development and align with National Agenda Reforms.
Addressing the devastating impact of the 2022 floods, the minister highlighted the $30 billion in damages Pakistan sustained and criticized the inadequate international response to the disaster.
He stressed that Pakistan has contributed minimally to global climate change, and should not bear the financial burden alone.

The minister called for fairer support from the international community. He said that essential funds allocated to sectors like education and health had to be diverted to flood relief.
Modernizing Pakistan’s Railways
Additionally, Ahsan Iqbal emphasized Pakistan’s interest in modernizing its railways with cutting-edge technology to boost connectivity and regional trade.
He also emphasized the need to revive key infrastructure projects, which were initially approved in 2018 but faced delays under the previous government.
These projects cover railways, transport, and maritime infrastructure, which are crucial for Pakistan’s long-term development.
The ADB delegation and Pakistani officials also discussed the Multi-Tranche Financing Facility (MFF) for road projects. Both sides are committed to future cooperation in enhancing the country’s transport infrastructure.

Ahsan Iqbal proposed establishing a knowledge-sharing platform for global access to ADB’s expertise. He said that it would allow other countries to learn from its models and successful projects.
In the end, the minister thanked ADB for its current support, especially in the aftermath of the floods.
Both sides reiterated the importance of ADB’s partnership in Pakistan’s development efforts.
