Tajikistan Continues Power Exports to Neighbors

-

Dushanbe: Tajikistan has exported electricity worth over $82.3 million to its neighbouring countries from January to August this year, marking a slight decrease of $2.8 million (3.3%) compared to the same period in 2023.

During this timeframe, the country generated approximately 15.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, of which about 1 billion kilowatt-hours, or 6.5% of the total production, were supplied to Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.

Over 80% of Tajikistan’s electricity exports were directed to Afghanistan, with the remaining 20% going to Uzbekistan.

While electricity exports to Uzbekistan are limited to the summer season, supplies to Afghanistan will continue into the autumn and winter months, albeit in smaller volumes, reportedly “exclusively for the preservation of infrastructure.”

Furthermore, a memorandum of understanding has been signed with Kazakhstan, ensuring that electricity from the Rogun hydropower plant will be supplied to the country until 2032.

These agreements with Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are crucial for securing external financing for the completion of the Rogun project.
Once the Rogun hydropower plant reaches full capacity, nearly 70% of the electricity it produces will be exported to other Central Asian nations.
