Experts Urge US Goodwill on Chinese EV Tariffs

-

Beijing 31 August 2024 (TDI): With the United States reportedly set to announce final tariff plans on imported Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) and other goods, Chinese experts have called for a goodwill gesture from Washington, stressing that pragmatic economic cooperation between the two largest economies benefits both the US and the world.

Experts argue that while some Western countries have imposed high tariffs on Chinese EVs, the long-term impact is expected to be limited.
They believe that Chinese automakers have significant potential to expand into other markets, such as BRICS nations and the Global South.

They also emphasized China’s patience and resilience in dealing with trade barriers erected by some Western countries.

US National Security Advisor’s Visit

Following the recent visit of US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan to China, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that Beijing and Washington have agreed to hold a vice-ministerial meeting of the China-US commercial and trade working group in Tianjin on September 7.

However, amid growing dialogue to stabilize bilateral relations, reports have surfaced that the US Trade Representative is preparing to unveil final decisions on tariffs for Chinese imports, including EVs, in the coming days.

US Trade Representative Katherine Tai expressed strong support for Canada’s 100 percent tariffs on Chinese-made EVs on Thursday.

The Biden administration’s renewed tariff threats suggest flaws in its green policies, Lü Xiang, a US studies expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, told the Global Times.

“Many US businesses oppose new tariffs on Chinese goods because such measures could hinder the green transition in both the US and globally,” Lü noted, urging Washington to make a constructive gesture.

In June, it was reported that a coalition of 173 trade associations in the US, operating under the “Americans For Free Trade” umbrella, requested a hearing on the proposed tariffs on Chinese EVs and other products.

Bao Jianyun, Director of the Center for International Political Economy Studies at Renmin University of China, indicated that the US tariffs on Chinese EVs will likely be a key topic during the upcoming meeting in Tianjin.

“It is hoped that the US will take a long-term view of its relationship with China. As major global players, both nations have a responsibility to their people and the world to find mutually beneficial solutions,” Bao stated.

Despite high tariffs from some Western countries, Bao believes Chinese automakers have considerable potential to explore other markets, including BRICS and the Global South. He added that politically motivated trade barriers will not disrupt the global trend toward openness and cooperation and emphasized China’s capacity to navigate such challenges.
