President Xi Meets with US NSA Sullivan

Beijing, 29 August 2024 (TDI): Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed that countries must set their differences aside and focus on cooperation to find a way forward amid a rapidly changing world.

He made these remarks during a Thursday meeting with the US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in Beijing.

“In light of the responsibility both China and the United States hold for global peace and common development, despite the great changes that have taken place in the past four decades, China’s policy of adding a US leg to its chair has not changed,” Xi said.

He added that China was still willing to maintain a healthy and stable relationship with the US and cooperate with it in various ways.

President Xi reiterated that it was the principles of mutual respect, fairness and justice, and win-win cooperation that continue to guide relations between China and the United States.

“While China would ‘stand firm in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and development interests’, the people-to-people basis of the two countries’ relationship had grown deeper still,” he added.

The Chinese president expressed hope that the US would see his country’s rise as opening opportunities, not posing threats, and called on both countries to work together to chart the right course for the future of the relationship.
