New York, 5 September 2023 (TDI): The 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) concluded on Tuesday morning in New York.
Outgoing President Csaba Kőrösi emphasized the critical importance of cooperation among nations in the face of geopolitical rivalries.
He highlighted pressing global challenges such as accelerating climate change, biodiversity loss, education, and gender inequality.
Likewise, he urged governments to back their promises with financial commitments, translating actions for sustainable development into budgetary policies, national regulations, and capacity building.
The 77th session, which began on September 13 the previous year, featured significant events such as the UN Water Conference, which adopted a significant action plan to safeguard this essential resource.
During this session, discussions centered on disaster risk reduction, ensuring justice for all, fostering inclusive societies, achieving universal health coverage, and promoting sustainable consumption and production.
President Kőrösi emphasized the relevance of the three pillars of the United Nations (UN); peace and security, development, and human rights.
He also talked about whether the UN Charter was genuinely being upheld globally in light of ongoing conflicts, including the war in Ukraine, and the need to address nuclear proliferation and the nuclear arms race.
He stressed the necessity of integrated, comprehensive solutions that address not only current challenges but also future ones, emphasizing the importance of financing and international cooperation.

Furthermore, President Kőrösi underscored the need for reform and evolution in key UN bodies like the General Assembly and the Security Council.
In this vein, he noted that the world has evolved significantly since the establishment of the UN and that the organization must adapt accordingly.
Following his address, Dennis Francis, the President-Elect of the 78th session, took the oath of office, pledging to fulfill his responsibilities to the best of his ability.
Subsequently, President Kőrösi officially handed over the distinctive wooden gavel to his successor and adjourned the meeting.
