HANOI, September 10, 2024 (TDI):: Severe flooding is expected to affect parts of northern Vietnam, including the capital, Hanoi, as the aftermath of Typhoon Yagi, the most powerful storm to hit the region this year, continues to cause devastation.
According to the latest update from the disaster management agency, the typhoon has so far left approximately 65 people dead 39 others missing in the north.
The typhoon has triggered flash floods and landslides, with 752 people reported injured. Industrial areas in the north, including Bac Giang and Thai Nguyen, which house factories for multinational companies such as Apple supplier Foxconn and Samsung Electronics, are also experiencing severe flooding.
It is currently unclear if these companies have been impacted. The typhoon had previously struck the Philippines and the southern Chinese island of Hainan.
Several rivers in northern Vietnam have reached alarming levels, causing widespread inundation of villages and residential areas.
The disaster management agency and state media report that a 30-year-old bridge over the Red River in Phu Tho collapsed on Monday, leaving 8 people missing.
In response, authorities have restricted traffic on other bridges across the river, citing rapidly rising water levels.
