5th Meeting of European Union held in Sri Lanka

Colombo, 2 October 2021 (TDI): The Fifth Meeting of the European Union (EU) was held under a Working Group on Governance, Rule of Law, and Human Rights. The group met in Colombo on 29th September 2021.

The Working Group meeting took place as part of regular bilateral engagements of the EU and Sri Lanka. They shared their COVID-19 pandemic management experiences. Sri Lanka praised the EU’s assistance for COVAX. The EU and Sri Lanka agreed on the need of involving civil society and providing it with the space to function in diversity. The EU stated that it will continue to support Sri Lanka in these efforts.

The two partners reiterated their commitment to good governance, the rule of law, and the preservation of human rights. They discussed their shared interests in the protection and promotion of fundamental rights. Moreover, they agreed to continue working together on relevant matters.
