50 years of Sino-US Ping Pong Diplomacy

Beijing, 23 November 2021 (TDI): China and the United States are celebrating 50 years of the historical Ping-Pong Diplomacy.

The Ping-Pong Diplomacy helped China and the U.S. to cool down their stressed relations in 1971. The two states initiated their diplomatic relations when the Table Tennis players of the two sides greeted each other and exchanged gifts during the World Championships in Nagoya, Japan. Chinese leaders then invited the American team to visit China. The U.S team visited China in the next year and then the U.S. also invited China to the United States. The Chinese team also then visited the U.S. which helped to improve their relations.

It helped to melt the frozen ice between the relations of the two countries. It led the two states to normalize their relations amid the Cold War. The two states are celebrating the Golden Jubilee of the event.

China and the United States are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Ping Pong Diplomacy by remaking Ping-Pong Diplomacy in the World Table Tennis Championship where the players of China and the US. are going to team up in Houston.

The Chinese and the U.S. players will play mixed double matches. Sports should be separated from politics. As sports can help to improve the relations between the states as it happened in 1971. It is known as Ping-Pong Diplomacy 2.0. History is going to repeat in Houston which will help to strengthen the tense relations between the two sides.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Zhao Lijian in his regular press conference on 23 November 2021 that the event of Ping-Pong Diplomacy in 1971 is one of the most important events in international relations. It normalized the political relations between the two leading states of the contemporary world. The review of the Ping-Pong Diplomacy will help the two states to strengthen their relations, he added.

Zhao noted that the Ping-Pong Diplomacy 2.0 will provide a reminder to the United States that the Sino-US relations require another Ping-Pong diplomacy to strengthen their relationship.
