313 Chinese Arrested for Telecom Fraud

Beijing (TDI): As much as 313 Chinese nationals blamed for cross-border telecom fraud have been transferred from Myanmar to China, China’s Ministry of Public Security said Monday.

The suspects were arrested after a joint law enforcement operation between Chinese and Myanmar police aimed at cracking down on telecom and online fraud in northern Myanmar, Chinese state-run media reported.

During the crackdown 313 Chinese among 870 suspects detained suspects were arrested. All of them were involved in cross-border telecom fraud, the ministry stated.

For the first time the two countries conducted a joint operations against criminals in March, and that time over 800 telecom fraud suspects were busted.

The ministry stated that cooperation with Myanmar is continuing and expressed to conduct regular joint operations to combat telecom and online fraud involving Chinese nationals in Myanmar.

Earlier, the ministry had said that since july 2023, more than 49,000 culprits involving in cybercrimes and fraud had been handed over to China’s custody from Myanmar.

Though sometime online scams locations of the culprits is being reported as exist somewhere inside China, but other reports suggest that criminals from China generally use locations in the neighboring countries for conducting online crimes.

In May the Guardian reported that Chinese network is behind one of world’s ‘largest online scams as More than 800,000 people in Europe and the US appear to have been duped into sharing card details and other sensitive personal data.

These individuals have with a vast network of fake online designer shops apparently operated from China.

The UK’s Chartered Trading Standards Institute has described this scam as one of the largest scams of its kind, with 76,000 fake websites created.
