Zuckerberg to pay Trump $25m settlement

Washington, January 30, 2025 (TDI): Mark Zuckerberg will pay roughly $25 million as part of a legal settlement signed by President Donald Trump against Zuckerberg and Meta.

Trump sued Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Meta, in 2021 after his Facebook and Instagram social media accounts were suspended due to the January 6 Capitol riots.

In the summer of 2024, Meta lifted the restrictions on Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in anticipation of the U.S. presidential elections.

Out of the total settlement amount of $25 million, $22 million will be funded towards Trump’s Presidential Library, while the remaining amount will be used to cover legal costs.

In early 2021, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, took a bold step by suspending Donald Trump’s social media accounts.

This decision came in the wake of the events surrounding the Capitol riots on January 6, where Trump was accused of violence through his online rhetoric and presence.

The company announced that he would be barred from both platforms for a minimum of two years, effectively silencing one of the most prominent voices in social media.

After Trump’s victory in the 2024 elections, Mark Zuckerberg visited Donald Trump at his Florida resort, which was seen as a sign of improvement in their previously tense relationship over the same issue.

Shortly after the visit to Florida, Meta donated $1 million to an inauguration fund for Trump. Furthermore, Zuckerberg also attended Trump’s inauguration ceremony in the U.S. Capitol.

Trump vs Zuckerberg

For years, President Trump criticized Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook, labeling the platform as “anti-Trump” in 2017. Their relationship worsened more after Donald Trump’s accounts were suspended, leading him to label Facebook as an “enemy of the people” in March 2017.
