Harare, 8 August 2022 (TDI): Zimbabwe National Heroes Day is a public holiday that the nation is observing on the second Monday of August. This is a day of remembrance to commemorate, honor, and celebrate the heroic deeds and courage displayed by Zimbabweans.

 

On this day, Zimbabweans pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for an independent, free and peaceful nation. Zimbabwe is celebrating Heroes Day by organizing parades and processions in the honor of the heroes of the Revolution.

History of Heroes Day

Growing African nationalism in the 1960s led several countries across the continent to free themselves from British colonial rule and gain independence.

Zimbabwe War for Liberation also known as the Rhodesian Bush War lasted for more than 15 years. Approximately 10,000 guerrilla fighters died and over 20,000 civilian killings took place during the battle.

Ceremonies of Heroes Day

National Heroes Acre is the main hub for the ceremonies on National Heroes Day. People lay down wreaths on the graves of National heroes. The President of Zimbabwe comes to pay his respects.

On Heroes Day, the President of Zimbabwe gives a speech to the nation. Arranging a musical gala at the National Sports Stadium is one of the festivities of the day. Several artists perform throughout the night at the Heroes’ Day Gala. People are celebrating this memorable day by singing patriotic songs and marching to the location of the event. The event is also free to access for the public.

Heroes Day encourages the nation to take charge of their lives and do something good for the prosperity of their motherland. This day also inspires the Zimbabweans to follow in the footsteps of those who liberated Zimbabwe. The day also rekindles the citizen’s faith in the country’s freedom fighters.

By celebrating Heroes Day youth in Zimbabwe, they contribute to the development of technology, agriculture, and entrepreneurship in the country.
