WARSAW (TDI): Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is meeting Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki in Warsaw today, Friday, marking an important moment for Kyiv as it seeks to strengthen ties with a key neighbor amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

The meeting follows months of limited direct engagement between the two leaders. Zelensky and Nawrocki spoke by phone after the Polish president’s election victory, but it took nearly four months for them to meet in person.

Poland has been on the frontline of the war’s humanitarian fallout since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, taking in more than a million Ukrainian refugees.

Nawrocki previously declined several invitations to visit Kyiv, preferring instead that the Ukrainian leader come to Warsaw, a delay that some Ukrainians viewed as dismissive.

Wojciech Przybylski from the Res Publica Foundation stated that Nawrocki’s ties to Trump could make him a useful ally for Zelensky, allowing the Ukrainian president to navigate complex international relationships.

Nawrocki’s presidency was supported by Poland’s nationalist party and far-right voters critical of Warsaw’s level of aid to Ukraine. His position signals an effort to assert influence in shaping Poland-Ukraine relations.

An EU official said Nawrocki’s approach to relations with Ukraine is more hard-line than that of his predecessor, Andrzej Duda, though Poland remains firmly committed to supporting Ukraine.

The talks come at a time when European support for Ukraine is facing increasing scrutiny and public debate.

While Poland has been one of Ukraine’s most consistent backers throughout the war, recent shifts in political sentiment, especially among more nationalist groups, have led to more cautious positions on defense and aid.

President Zelensky has underscored that maintaining close cooperation with Warsaw is vital, highlighting the long-standing bond between the two nations and their shared interests in security and economic recovery.

The meeting is aimed at reaffirming mutual commitment and ensuring continued support as Ukraine navigates both battlefield pressures and diplomatic challenges.

Zelensky’s visit also signals Kyiv’s intent to engage directly with European leaders to address broader concerns about military assistance, refugee support and economic ties, even as some European nations debate the level and direction of future help for Ukraine.

Poland has hosted more than a million Ukrainian refugees since the full-scale invasion began in 2022 and remains a key partner in defense cooperation, providing substantial military aid and logistical support for Ukraine’s war effort.

The meeting between Zelensky and Nawrocki is expected to include delegation-level talks on security, economic cooperation and historical issues, and will be followed by joint statements to the press.
