London, 6 September 2024 (TDI): Teenagers will only be recommended specific health and fitness videos on YouTube, including ones that “idealize” particular body shapes.
Users between the ages of 13 and 17 can still look for and watch fitness-related content, but they won’t be encouraged to watch the same videos again.
YouTube claims that it is taking action because it is worried that young kids who are repeatedly exposed to this kind of content may form “negative beliefs” about themselves.
Although the move is applauded by experts, they feel that a “broader discussion” regarding youth health and fitness should go hand in hand.
After watching a particular fitness video, YouTube’s algorithm typically suggests further content for users to watch and shows relevant videos in a sidebar.
When teenagers view specific kinds of content, such as: the platform says this will no longer be available to them.
- Videos that elevate some types over others by comparing their physical attributes
- Fitness Videos that promote particular body weights or levels
- Videos showing intimidation and non-contact fighting as forms of social hostility
“When they interact with online content that consistently promotes ideal ideals, youths are more prone than adults to develop unfavorable self-perceptions.” according to a report from YouTube’s Youth and Families Advisory Committee, which prompted the company to take these steps.

The limitations on the films that are available, however, will only be applicable when the user is signed into a YouTube account and has provided a precise birthdate.
The platform lacks the ability to confirm users’ claimed ages.
Parents may now monitor their children’s YouTube activity with the help of new features introduced by YouTube.
When teenagers in their home upload videos or begin livestreaming, parents will be able to link their accounts with them to view their uploads, subscriptions, and comments. They will also be able to get emails about these activities.
