Yemeni-Egyptian Strategic Dialogue concludes in Cairo

-

Cairo, 27 June 2024 (TDI): The eighth ministerial meeting of the Yemeni-Egyptian Strategic Dialogue ended on 26 June in Cairo. The discussions focused on exploring avenues of cooperation between the two nations.

The foreign Ministers of Yemen and Egypt, Dr. Shaye Mohsen al-Zindani and Sameh Shukri, discussed bilateral ties. Additionally, Khaled Mahfouz Bahah, the Ambassador of Yemen to Cairo and Ambassador Mohamed Al-Badri, the assistant foreign minister of Egypt for Arab affairs, marked their presence in the strategic dialogue.

In addition, the 8th ministerial meeting sought to improve collaboration between Egypt and Yemen on a number of issues. Important strategic issues discussed at the dialogue included Yemen’s peace process, Red Sea security, bilateral relations, and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Additionally, Sameh Shoukry promised Egypt would keep assisting Yemen’s infrastructural growth and human resource development. He emphasized that Egypt continues to host a sizable Yemeni community in addition to providing food and medical assistance.

Appreciation for Egypt’s Support

Moreover, Yemen’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Mubarak, praised the longstanding historical connections between Egypt and Yemen and expressed his country’s profound gratitude for Egypt’s unwavering support for Yemen during times of political turbulence.

Dr. Mubarak expressed concern over the rising hostilities in the Red Sea and their possible effects on international trade, navigation, and the economy. Subsequently, both urged funding for UN relief efforts and international cooperation to solve Yemen’s escalating humanitarian disaster.

Resumption of Strategic Dialogue

The Yemeni-Egyptian Strategic Dialogue dates back to 1998, and until 2010, seven sessions were held. Following a break, the ministerial meeting recommenced this year. Political instability and proxy war in Yemen primarily caused the decade-long hiatus.

However, the resumption of Dialogue has been motivated by the common goal of the leadership of both nations. The common aim of enhancing collaboration to rectify the unstable regional environment shall pave the way for a safe and regionally integrated Middle East and North African (MENA) region.
