Xi, Sri Lankan President Discuss BRI Cooperation

Beijing (TDI): Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday that China will actively support Sri Lanka in focusing on economic development and the two countries should jointly foster new highlights in high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, as well as cooperation in modern agriculture, digital economy and marine economy.

China’s efforts in further deepening reform comprehensively to advance Chinese modernization will offer new opportunities for Sri Lanka’s development, Xi said when during a meeting with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is in China for a state visit.

Noting that China and Sri Lanka enjoy traditional ties, Xi said bilateral relations have maintained healthy and stable development over the past 68 years, setting an example of friendly coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation.

With joint efforts, China and Sri Lanka have continuously strengthened strategic cooperative partnership featuring mutual assistance and ever-lasting friendship.

High-quality Belt and Road cooperation and collaboration in different fields have achieved fruitful results, bringing tangible benefits to the two peoples, Xi said.

The two nations should have a keen grasp of bilateral ties from a strategic perspective and jointly build a China-Sri Lanka community with a shared future, he said.

Dissanayake kicked off a 4-day state visit to China on Tuesday.

This marks the leader’s first trip to China after taking office.

China and Sri Lanka have long-standing ties.

Since our two nations established diplomatic relations in 1957, the bilateral relationship has stood the test of the changing global landscape, always maintained sound and steady growth, and set up a fine example of friendly ties and mutually beneficial cooperation between countries different in size, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on January 10.
