Xi, Putin Discuss China-Russia Ties, Global Issues

Beijing (TDI): Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin recently engaged via phone call where they discussed the progress of China-Russia relations and major regional and international issues.

The discussions between both Presidents highlighted the shared commitment of both nations to deepen strategic cooperation,  boost collaboration, development and enhance stability in international affairs, according to a statement issued by Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the call, President Xi highlighted the balanced advancement of collaboration in various sectors, including joint commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the broader global anti-fascist war.

He also emphasized that China and Russia have historically been close neighbors and reliable partners to each other, committed to mutual support and shared development.

“Regardless of evolving global dynamics, China and Russia remain dedicated to furthering their national interests and contributing positively to international stability”, he said.

On his part, President Putin expressed Russia’s strong commitment to fostering relations with China as a long-term strategic partner.

He expressed Russia’s interest in maintaining high-level exchanges and enhancing cooperation in the upcoming year.

Moreover, he highlighted the significance of commemorating historical milestones and reaffirmed that, “Russia’s engagement with China is independent of external pressures or temporary circumstances.”

The two leaders also discussed recent international developments, including Russian President’s virtual meeting with the President of the United States.

He also provided an update on Russia’s perspective regarding the Russia-Ukraine crisis, emphasizing the country’s commitment to addressing the root causes of the conflict and pursuing a sustainable resolution.

President Xi reiterated China’s position on the crisis, referencing key principles outlined soon after the escalation of tensions.

He highlighted China’s diplomatic efforts, including collaboration with Brazil and other Global South nations through the “Group of Friends for Peace” initiative, which seeks to create conducive conditions for a political settlement.

China welcomed all crucial efforts which aimed at resolving the crisis through dialogue and peaceful negotiations, he added.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership for the new era, underscoring their shared role in promoting stability and constructive engagement in global affairs.
