KAZAN, (TDI): Chinese President Xi Jinping has committed to strengthening ties with Iran during meeting with President Masoud Pezeshkian in Russia, as reported by the state-run news agency Xinhua.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the BRICS summit and marked their first encounter since Pezeshkian’s election following the death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash.
Xi affirmed China’s dedication to fostering friendly cooperation with Tehran.
This renewed support comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, particularly due to Israel’s war on Gaza and its military operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon, alongside anticipation of Israel’s response to Iran’s recent missile strike.
During a BRICS session, Pezeshkian urged member countries to leverage their collective resources to help resolve the conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza.
Xi echoed calls for a ceasefire, emphasizing the urgent need to halt violence and strive for a comprehensive, just, and lasting resolution to the Palestinian issue. He underscored that an early truce and an end to the fighting in Gaza are crucial for de-escalating regional tensions.
Earlier on Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged BRICS countries to aim for high-quality growth in improved BRICS cooperation.
Xi commented at the 16th BRICS Summit, which was held in Kazan, Russia.
