Geneva, 13 October 2022 (TDI): World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness held on the second Thursday of October. This year it is being celebrated on 13 October 2022 and it focuses global attention on vision impairment, including blindness.
Global awareness regarding eye care
World Sight Day is an excellent opportunity to focus the world’s attention on the importance of eye care. The theme for this year’s World Sight Day on October 13 is “Love Your Eyes.”
Moreover, World Sight Day is a significant opportunity to raise awareness for eye health all across the globe. This day reminds us to take care of our own eyes and helps inform the world that there are still over a billion people on this planet who cannot get the eye care they need.
On this year’s World Sight Day, World Health Organization (WHO) is urging countries in the South-East Asia Region to accelerate their efforts regarding comprehensive eye health services. These efforts are supposed to be in line with the newly adopted Regional Action Plan for integrated people-centered eye care 2022-2030.
Ahead of World Sight Day Peter Holland, CEO of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) said, “I’d like to thank the entire sight sector for once again uniting behind World Sight Day. It is incredible to see people from around the world getting involved.”
According to an estimate, in 2020 the economic cost of blindness and moderate to severe vision loss globally was US$ 411 billion.
