World Press Freedom Day 2024

-

The year 2024 is spotlighting World Press Freedom Day in the face of Global Environmental Crises. Environmental journalists bravely speak up daily about the harsh realities that communities face.

World Press Freedom Day highlights the importance of Journalism and Freedom of expression.

Each year, Press Freedom Day serves as a vital reminder of the challenges journalists encounter and the essential role they play in upholding the free flow of information.

Origin of Press Freedom Day

Following UNESCO’s General Conference, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed World Press Freedom Day in December 1993. Since 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek has been celebrated as World Press Freedom Day Worldwide.

Experts view that even after 30 Years, the historical connection between freedom to seek, impart, and receive information remains as relevant as it was at its commencement.

May 3 serves as a reminder to the worldwide Governments to honor their pledge to uphold press freedom.

It’s a reflection among Media professionals for introspection on professional ethics and the freedom of the press. It’s a time to celebrate the core tenets of press freedom, evaluate its global status, safeguard media independence against threats, and honor journalists who sacrificed their lives in service.

Global Insights on Press Freedom Day

Edith Lederer is an award-winning Associated Press reporter with over half a century of experience. Her work highlights the insights into why Journalism matters and explains the significance of World Press Freedom Day.

While highlighting the work of journalists, Edith said, “We write the first draft of the history, we tell the world what is happening, and our journalism is based on facts. Our job is to tell you about the wars, the horrible experiences and the impact of war has on civilians, especially women and children.”

The UN high Commissioner for Human Rights emphasized, “Disinformation is deepening divides, fueling crises around the world; while free press is under attack. Just last year, 71 journalists killed, 320 imprisoned. World Press Freedom Day is a chance to stand for truth, protect those bravely working to uncover it & counter oppression.”

“Suppression, criminalization & attacks against journalists are being met with impunity. This cannot become our status quo. In this crucial election year, we must ensure Governments protect our right to hold those in power to account and speak out when needed,” he added.

Furthermore, Josep Borrell Fontelles, the EU High Representative, commended the efforts of Palestinian Journalists, saying, “With the Press Prize to the Palestinian journalists covering the war in Gaza, UNESCO  pays a due tribute to the courage of those who have lost their lives or put it at risk every day.”

How Journalism Works to Encounter Significant Challenges?

Journalism encounters significant challenges in disseminating information on contemporary issues, such as climate migration, supply chain problems, illegal mining, pollution, animal trafficking, deforestation, and climate change.

Moreover, Journalism ensures that the visibility of these issues is crucial for promoting peace, and democratic values worldwide.

This is the reason why the work and role of journalists is crucial and commendable. It is through their consistent efforts and perseverance that we know what is happening around the globe.
