World Leaders React to India’s Attack on Pakistani Civilians

Early Wednesday night, India attacked six locations in Pakistan; including Ahmedpur East, Muzzafarabad, Kotli, Muridke, Sialkot and Shakargarh. The missile attacks claimed civilian lives and in response, Pakistan has so far shot down five Indian Air Force’s jets; three Rafael planes, one SU-30 and one MIG-29.

The Indian attack came after tensions have been brewing between the two countries since the Pahalgam attack of April 22, in Indian Illegally Occupied Kashmir. The attack was very much anticipated and the countries were urging both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint. UN’s Secretary General spoke to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif twice during this time.

After the last night’s attack, the US President Donald Trump called it a “shame.” He said, “It’s a shame. Just heard about it. I guess people knew something was going to happen based on a little bit of the past. They’ve been fighting for a long time. They’ve been fighting for many, many decades. I hope it ends very quickly.”

US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio said he is monitoring the situation and hopes that it “ends quickly.”

The US Department of State posted on X, “Earlier this afternoon, @SecRubio spoke to the national security advisors from India and Pakistan. He urged both to keep lines of communication open and avoid escalation.”

The Foreign Minister of Turkiye, Hakan Fidan, spoke to his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar on telephone and assured Turkiye’s full support to Pakistan in the face of Indian escalation. Similar sentiments resonated when Turkiye’s Ambassador to Pakistan called on Deputy PM/FM Dar.

Spokesperson for the UN’s Secretary General Antonio Guterres said, “The Secretary-General is very concerned about the Indian military operations across the Line of Control and international border. He calls for maximum military restraint from both countries. The world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan.”

Spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry noted, “”China finds India’s military operation early this morning regrettable. We are concerned about the ongoing situation. We urge both sides to act in the larger interest of peace and stability, remain calm, exercise restraint and refrain from taking actions that may further complicate the situation.”

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary stated, “In regard to the terrorist act that occurred in Kashmir on April 22, our country firmly condemns such acts of terrorism. Furthermore, we express strong concern that this situation may lead to further retaliatory exchanges and escalate into a full-scale military conflict. For the peace and stability of South Asia, we strongly urge both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and stabilize the situation through dialogue.”
