World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2021

June 17, 2021 (TDI): Today, the world is celebrating World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.

This year’s theme for the day was to restore degraded land into healthy land. The restoration process will bring many economic opportunities as it creates large numbers of jobs and economic sustainability. Restoration of degraded land also slows down the rate at which climate change is turning. More than 100 UN member countries aim to restore 1 billion hectares of land in the next ten years.

It will bring benefits for the planet and the people too.

On this day the Embassy of France along with the Mountain and Glacier protection organization is building an eco-friendly irrigation system in Chani Ragyul, Gilgit-Baltistan. People in that region are facing a water shortage problem. This initiative will help to cope with the water shortage problem. German Ambassador to Pakistan, Bernhard Schlagheck, took to Twitter and appreciates Malteser International for the ongoing projects in the country especially in the region Sindh. He said Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. Malteser International projects will lessen the effects of climate change.
