Observed annually on May 9, the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers honors the invaluable contributions of UN peacekeepers in maintaining global peace and security.
The theme for the 2024 International Day of UN Peacekeepers is “Fit for the Future, Building Better Together.”
The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2002. This day serves as a tribute to the bravery, dedication, and sacrifice of both current and former peacekeepers, as well as those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Since the establishment of the first UN peacekeeping mission in 1948, over a million men and women from diverse backgrounds and nations have served under the UN flag.
These peacekeepers play a critical role in conflict zones around the world, tasked with complex and multifaceted responsibilities that range from monitoring ceasefires and protecting civilians to disarming ex-combatants and supporting the rule of law.

Peacekeeping plays an indispensable role in addressing today’s challenges and is evolving to meet the challenges of the future”.

Furthermore, the Government of Pakistan shared its perspective on the occasion, “The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is observed annually to highlight the vital role of UN peacekeeping forces in maintaining global peace.
The Government of Pakistan pays tribute to our Pakistani peacekeeping forces, who demonstrate extraordinary skill and dedication in fulfilling the mission of the United Nations peacekeeping forces”.
