Geneva, 31 August 2024 (TDI): To discuss the continuous Mpox outbreak hitting the area, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) met with representatives of UN agencies on Thursday in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The meeting’s main goal was to manage the outbreak cohesively, particularly in the countries war-torn east, according to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization, who reported via X.
Participant commitment to supporting the government-led response was reiterated during the discussions. Important actions include making vaccinations available to essential patients and their contacts, improving disease surveillance, and raising community awareness.
“With coordinated effort and cooperation, we can contain the Mpox epidemics,” Tedros said, expressing optimism in the outbreak’s containment.
Mpox outbreak is now considered a public health emergency of global significance by the WHO. Over 15,000 suspected cases have been documented, and the disease has spread to twelve nations throughout Africa.
