Tianjin: 28 July 2021 (TDI)

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi received Taliban delegation in Tianjin, on Wednesday. The 9-member delegation is led by the Afghan Taliban Political Commission’s head Abdul Ghani Baradar.

In the meeting with the delegation, FM Wang Yi reaffirmed the Chinese stance of ‘Afghan-led and Afghan owned’ and stated that China firmly believes that the destiny of Afghanistan should be in the hands of the Afghan people. China hopes that the Taliban will always prioritize the needs of Afghan people and will uphold their commitment to peace talks to achieve the goal of establishing peace in Afghanistan, said Wang. He also mentioned that China as the largest neighbor of Afghanistan will always practice a friendlier policy towards the Afghan nation.

Wang Yi also committed to supporting the role of the Taliban in the restoration of Afghanistan and urged the Taliban to cease its connections to the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM), a UN-declared terrorist group.

In response to Wang’s comments, the leader of the Taliban delegation said that the Taliban won’t allow any group or force to use the territory of Afghanistan to harm the interests of China.
