Vietnamese Foreign Minister meeting with US Secretary of State

Washington DC/Hanoi, 5 August 2022 (TDI): The Vietnamese Foreign Minister, Bui Thanh Son met with the United States (US) Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken.

The Secretary of State and Vietnam’s Foreign Minister discussed the importance of strengthening their Comprehensive Partnership in addition to working together in advancing an “affirmative vision in the Indo-Pacific”.

In line with the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership, the US Secretary highlighted that they work closely together toward their shared security as well as prosperity. Secretary Blinken stated that their shared strategic vision “will only grow over time”.

Previously, on 27 May 2021, Secretary Blinken spoke with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Son. Both sides celebrated the strength of the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership.

In addition, they reaffirmed their shared commitment to protecting and preserving the rules-based order in the South China Sea.

At the time, both parties also discussed concerns regarding the military coup in Burma and commitments to addressing climate change and tackling COVID-19.

Secretary Blinken further emphasized US commitment to ASEAN centrality and the Mekong-US Partnership. Along with the support of a strong, prosperous, and independent Vietnam that respects human rights and the rule of law.

Notably, the Mekong-US Partnership was launched in 2020 and it is an expansion of the Lower Mekong Initiative.

Meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister

On 14 May 2022, Secretary Blinken met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Washington, D.C. on the sidelines of the US-ASEAN Special Summit.

Secretary Blinken, therefore, highlighted the strong US relationship with ASEAN. That is, evidenced by the US-ASEAN Special Summit.

More to this, Secretary Blinken reaffirmed the thriving US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership. Together with US support for ASEAN centrality, the Mekong-US Partnership, and a strong, prosperous, and independent Vietnam.

Most importantly, the Prime Minister and the US Secretary of State discussed ways to deepen and broaden security cooperation, trade, and economic ties. Together with climate change cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges.
